If there’s anyone that has garnered the term “people’s champion” in boxing this year, it has been Mauricio Herrera. Losing a controversial decision to Danny Garcia in Puerto Rico may have done Herrera better than any victory he ever has. Now he’s on the hunt for a December 6th date and says it doesn’t matter who it is.
“I fought for a world title with Danny Garcia, I thought I won,” Herrera told ThaBoxingVoice.com. “Now I just want to fight the best whether they have belts or not. They’re not giving them to me. People choose who their champion is and I’m going towards that path.”
After signing with Golden Boy and giving Danny Garcia the fight of his life, he returned to beat Johan Perez in impressive fashion on the Canelo undercard. Herrera says a lot has changed in that time span.
“I’m not longer the opponent. Now that I’m signed with Golden Boy, they want you to win, it’s not like you have to be the opponent and defeat the odds,” explained Herrera.
With the rumors looming that Danny Garcia may vacate his WBA and WBC Jr. Welterweight titles, Herrera is very interested in who he can get in the ring to fight for the belts he feels are his. But one guy he would love to get in the ring is the “Can Man” Adrien Broner.
“Broner can get it,” stated Herrera. “If He (Garcia) vacates the titles, then I hope I can get the fight so I can fight for the titles, and I hope it would be Broner. I’m more smart and intelligent in the ring. To me he’s not impressive. I’d love to take that fight. He’s a tough showboat and that’s pretty much it. I’m a different Mexican fighter, not your typical brawling Mexican fighter, I would love that fight.”
Herrera assessed Broner’s last fight and is licking his chops because he feels he saw plenty of holes in Broner’s game which he can expose.
I saw the fight. There was a lot of inside fighting, and I liked that,” explained Herrera. “On the inside he pulls back a lot and gets hit easy. I can work inside too; I can get him just like that. I’m hoping to get fight. I think it’d be the perfect fight. But I just want to fight man. If I’m willing to fight Ruslan again, I’m willing to fight anyone.”
