mauricio-herrera-ready-625x3602015 is shaping out to be a great year for boxing complete with incredible matchups. Fights like Mayweather-Pacquiao and Canelo-Kirkland will soon be in the books, while Matthysse-Provodnikov and Rios-Alvarado 3 are already in the books. Fights between Canelo and Cotto are a possibility, and if you believe the talk going on behind the scenes then Porter-Bradley could be realistic. There is also some strong rumblings that Danny Garcia will thoroughly test himself against Adrien Broner or Marcos Maidana before the year is up.

However, it isn’t just the most sought after names in boxing that are making waves. What makes boxing, so special this year is the quality matchups from top to bottom.

Right now, there is a strong possibility that Mauricio Herrera and Hank Lundy will lock horns at some point, possibly in their very next fight. Some reports are suggesting that the fight is done, or at least agreed to. But that isn’t true.

According to Steve Kim in an article published on Boxingscene.com, Herrera-Lundy is not finalized, but it is being negotiated, and all parties are working towards making the fight a reality.

Kim spoke to Golden Boy Promotions’ Eric Gomez who had this to say about the potential matchup between Herrera and Lundy, “It’s not done, there have been some discussions, but it’s not done. We’re still working on it.”

This matchup is solid, even if both Herrera and Lundy are coming off of losses in their last outings.

Herrera was a hard-luck loser against Jose Benavidez in a fight that many felt he deserved to win. It was yet another case of Herrera not getting the benefit of the doubt, and that’s putting it mildly. Lundy lost a split decision against Thomas Dulorme in his last fight.

Even with the losses, this fight has real potential to be fun. In actuality, the fact that they both lost might end up making this fight better because they will both be desperate for a win on a big stage.

In the same interview, Gomez admits to speaking with HBO about the potential for another HBO Latino show and Herrera-Lundy could be the fight that ends up on it. While he made no mention of the fight headlining the show, it seems obvious that this fight would be the main event because it offers up an interesting matchup between familiar fighters without the commercial appeal necessary to headline an actual HBO card.

It might not be finalized, but at least we have confirmation that this fight is being worked on, and everyone seems to be on board.
