Herrera wants Matthysse for next brawl

Mauricio HerreraMauricio Herrera (22-5, 7 KO’s) has singled out a murderous puncher as his preferred next opponent following his technical majority decision win over Hank Lundy this past weekend.

In two separate videos posted by Fight Hype, Herrera said a match with the heavy-handed Argentine Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KO’s) would serve as a great show for the fans and is one he is confident of winning based on a brief past encounter.

“I feel Lucas Matthysse is a good match for me. I match well with that guy I sparred him before, it was only like three rounds so I saw something in him and I feel the crowd would love to see that fight.”

“They[the rounds they sparred] were good I felt I was doing my thing. My jab was working. Everything I was doing to Ruslan[Provodnikov; another brutal hitter] was kind of similar so I thought ‘Man, if I fight this guy I know what to do.’”

“I never felt his power, but he was whooping the other sparring partners’ asses. I could see he hits hard, but I never let him get a good solid shot on me.”

Herrera must be a glutton for punishment. He singled out a man who is known to flatline his adversaries while his face bore fresh wounds suffered in the early stages against Lundy, which were so bad they caused the bout to be halted in the fifth round.

Herrera and Matthysse are both signed to Golden Boy Promotions and seem happy enough to stay in the light-welterweight division, which makes this a very plausible proposal.

Herrera has shown his willingness to take on big punchers time and again and has never been cowed by the prospect of raw power though he lacks in that area himself.

‘El Maestro’ trust his skills and his chin when he faces the fire and will need both to overcome Matthysse, who has just beaten a common opponent Ruslan Provodnikov last April in a brutal twelve-round affair.
