One of the best fights on paper this year is Lucas Matthysse facing off against Lamont Peterson and it takes place this Saturday night. According to rumor, the winner of this fight gets Danny Garcia and after that a possible showdown with Floyd “Money” Mayweather. I have been waiting for a fight like Peterson-Matthysse, this could be a fight future generations talk about, this could be our Hagler-Hearns.
Both Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse are incredible fighters, so when I was asked my prediction I really had to dig deep into each combatant. Lucas Matthysse is the most feared guy in the sport and its no secret as to why, all you have to do is look at his KO percentage. In his last fight against Mike Dallas Jr, Matthysee landed one good punch and that’s all he needed. It was lights out Dallas. I don’t care who he is facing, every time Matthysse steps into the ring, he is only one punch away from a victory.
Lamont Peterson only loss was to Tim Bradley and I doubt Peterson will ever get a rematch. The reason he won’t is because he is the most adaptive fighter out there who’s name is not Floyd Mayweather and Peterson would win in a rematch. Look at what Peterson did in his draw with Victor Ortiz and his win over Amir Khan. In both of those fights Peterson was put on the canvas early but he rose to his feet, made the needed adjustments, and got himself back into the fight. In his most recent fight Peterson destroyed veteran banger Kendall Holt, dropping him in the 4th round, the 6th round, and stopped him in the 8th.
After long deliberation I have my prediction for this fight. Matthysse will come out hungry for a knockout and I expect Peterson to hit the canvas in the early rounds. However, Peterson will rise to his feet and make the necessary changes he needs to and will stop Matthysse in the later rounds for a huge TKO victory. If Peterson actually gets a shot at Garcia, I believe Peterson will edge out a decision victory. Garcia defense and wide hooks will be enough for Peterson to exploit and capitalize on.
So if he beats Matthysse and Garcia will Peterson get a shot at Mayweather? I’m not sure but I will admit odds aren’t good due to Peterson getting caught with artificial testosterone and Mayweather’s stance on drug testing his competition. If the fight happens though, I like Peterson to dethrone the champ. Peterson is very well rounded, possibly the most well rounded fighter in boxing. He has power, speed, movement and awkward style you need to take advantage of Mayweather’s bad habits and pull out a win against the superstar.
