In Hostile Territory, Terence Crawford Wins World Title

Terence Crawford did what most fighters with big American promoters don’t do, that’s travel abroad to win a world title. Crawford went into Scotland and a full of a packed house in Glasgow silenced the raucous pro Ricky Burns crowd.

Going into the fight, most people felt it would be easy pickings for Crawford based off Burns’ last two performances where he was down in the Jonathan ‘Chelo’ Gonzalez fight before he retired and got a controversial  draw in a fight where most though Ray Beltran won.

In the early rounds, it was an even fight. Crawford seemed tense and it looked like we were heading into another close decision which would probably end up in the favor of Burns. Then Crawford picked up the pace, attacking and stalking Broner with no regard for any of what Burns came back with.

Burns seemed gun shy after the 4th round where he would go into his peek a boo defense. Many will say it was the broken jaw, I will say that Crawford didn’t let Burns get off.

The defense was there, the technique was there, the body work was there, and then the world champion was there.

Crawford leaves Scotland with the WBO lightweight belt with a majority decision and adds another lightweight belt to the Top Rank stable in a division looking for a breakout star. Expect to see Crawford in with Ray Beltran or Juan Diaz next but maybe down the road in mouth-watering fights against Yuriorkis Gamboa and Mikey Garcia.
