Carlos Molina has had difficulties landing opponents for a long time and promoters have shown little interest in putting any of their fighters in the ring against him. After his latest victory in which he became a 154 pound world champion promoters aren’t so hesitant to offer their fighters to step in the ring with the “King.”

After his victory over Ishe Smith, Molina expressed interest in facing Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez who had just suffered his first career loss that same night. It was a fight that Molina was offering to build himself up and to give Canelo a shot at another title. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer quickly shot down that fight but something else may have been in the works.

Victor Ortiz was set to make a comeback sometime this year and even though the dates kept changing and the opponent was unknown to many. In recent news it was revealed that Ortiz would be returning on the Broner-Maidana pay per view and he would be moving up in weight again to 154 pounds to face newly crowned champion Carlos Molina.

The first thing that rang through my head after hearing the matchup was “why?” Golden Boy wanted no part in Canelo facing Molina so why give Ortiz the shot? Then it dawned on me. What a great way to build Ortiz back up to make the fight between Canelo and Ortiz. That fight was supposed to happen after Ortiz faced Josesito Lopez but due to the broken jaw Ortiz had to take time off.

So they (Golden boy) use Molina to build up Ortiz but Molina is more than capable of playing the role of the spoiler and is working hard to get the victory and move on to bigger fights.

“I feel they want to take my belt and make that fight with Canelo vs. Ortiz but it doesn’t bother me at all,” said Molina. “It’s been like that all my career all I have to do is keep winning and I can’t be denied. Next year I might get Canelo, if not Mayweather which is really the fight I want. I know I can figure out any fighter out there and I’m going to keep proving it one fight at a time.”
