Jesus “Tuzo” Portuguez Passes Away

    Jesus “Tuzo” Portuguez who is considered to be the greatest boxer to ever come from Costa Rica has passed away on the night of July 12th in a public hospital in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. He was 85. Portuguez was in the hospital for several months for severe health complications.

    His daughter, Elisa Maria Portuguez confirmed her father’s passing through her Facebook acount.

    Portuguez made his career in Nicaragua. According to boxrec.com he had a record of 42 wins and 31 losses with 8 draws at middleweight. Aside from the record that BoxRec has of Prtuguez he has stated that he has fought over 235 fights within a twenty year span. He shined as a fighter in the 1940’s and 1950’s and over time was inducted into the WBC Hall of Fame. Aside from his induction he received numerous awards in the country.

    Portuguez, who was born in Barrio Los Angeles, San Jose, Costa Rica on November 12th, 1927 was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia hospital last Wednesday after several medical complications including his lungs being in a critical state. He passed away at 8:55 P.M. on July 12th.
