Abner Mares was victorious this past weekend over Jose Ramirez in exciting fashion. While a bout with Leo Santa Cruz may be down the road, he has unfinished business with Jhonny Gonzalez. Mares has been adamant on the rematch but it never came about last year.
Gonzalez for his part is just waiting for Mares to sign on for the rematch.
“Hopefully he signs this time,” Gonzalez told ESPN Deportes. “Hopefully he’s not all talk this time. Last year he said he wanted the rematch but he never signed on for the rematch. Now he’s talking again about wanting the rematch. I hope he’s serious because the public wants the fight so I hope he signs.”
Mares is back with his old trainer Clemente Medina and for at least one night looked like the old exciting Mares. Gonzalez agreed that Mares looked good in the ring and can’t wait for the fight.
“He looked very good. The people wanted to see him in there looking exciting. He looked very strong, connected with a lot of good punches, he has gotten better since his last few fights.”
