box_f_molina11_576On September 13, on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana 2, John Molina will fight veteran Humberto Soto in a 10-round non-title fight. The fight will not be part of the PPV show, but will be broadcasted live on regular Showtime as part of the ‘countdown live’ preview show, leading up to the PPV event. ThaBoxingVoice.com got a chance to speak with John Molina.

John Molina told ThaBoxingVoice.com that he is excited to share the ring with a great, exciting fighter like Humberto Soto. “It is going to be a great fight”, the fighter stated. “It is going to be a great night for boxing. The fans are going to get their moneys worth.” John Molina is happy that his fight is not part of the PPV-show, but will be shown live on regular Showtime, “Fans who are not able to buy the PPV event, are still going to have a chance to see me fight. I enjoy the opportunity.”

The Mexican-American fighter from Corvina, California assured us that he is not going to take his aging Mexican opponent lightly. He explained, “Soto is a crafty veteran. He is a 3-time world champion and has more than 70 fights. I will have to take him very seriously.”

We also asked John Molina about his opinion about another fighter on this card, Miguel Vazquez vs Mickey Bey. Even though John Molina knocked out Mickey Bey last year, it doesn’t bother him that Bey is going to get a title shot. “There are no ill feelings, I wish Mickey Bey good luck in his next fight”, the fighter told us. He later continued, “If you did a poll to ask the fans which fight they rather want to see, my fight or Bey-Vazquez, I’m pretty sure my fight is going to win that poll.”

Although this will be a big opportunity for the 31-year old Molina, he sounded very calmly, almost nonchalant, during this interview. He elaborated on that, “Being with Al Haymon and the opportunities I am getting right now is very exciting for me. However, it doesn’t matter where I fight. Whether it is in someones backyard, or on the biggest card of the year, it’s still just a fight.”

Al Haymon is definitely bringing John Molina’s career to a different level, ThaBoxingVoice.com asked him if he regrets that he did not make this move sooner. The fighter responded, “No. Dan Goossen did good by me. I am very grateful to him. I think everything fell in its place the way it is supposed to be.”

John Molina is now training with Jose Santa Cruz, the father of 122-pound sensation Leo Santa Cruz. The fighter spoke about the advantages of this change is in his career, “I used to have to drive one and an half hour after my training. It was wearing down my body. It is definitely better now. I’m acclimating to a different style. In my next fight you are going to see shades of me and shades of what my new trainer is teaching me.”

The fighter concluded this interview with praising his new conditioning coach, Michael Galvez. “He takes a strategic approach and makes sure everything is done the right way. He makes my job a lot easier. He will be a force to be reckoned with.”
