John Ryder Won’t Be Deterred By The Hype

One of the biggest threats to a young boxer’s career is hype. If they let the superlatives banded about by the press and fans to describe them get into their heads, then soon they can become entangled in the showbiz element of the sport, believing they are superstars when they are far from the finished article. Many believe that Adrien Broner weighing in 3 1/2lbs over the Super Featherweight limit was in part due to his attitude.

Hype can derail a career almost as fast as injury.

One young fighter with his feet well and truly on the ground is Islington, Middleweight, southpaw John Ryder. Despite being 11-0 as pro, signing with Matchroom Sports with fans and pundits alike all tipping him for greatness. He is in no hurry to launch himself into the spotlight.

“The top three in Britain, Barker, Murray and Macklin, they are quite far ahead, they are world level but after that I think it’s pretty competitive.” Ryder told ThaBoxingVoice.com

“I’m in no rush for big fights, I didn’t have a massive amateur career, I’m still learning as I go along in the pros.”

For the time being, John is more than happy to be appearing on the undercards of his more illustrious Matchroom stable mates and experiencing the big fight atmosphere.

“I’ve fought on some great shows, the Kell Brook and Carl Froch shows. I’m a boxing fan as well so to fight on these big shows is a dream come true. It’s the buzz; to be at the weigh in’s, to see the crowds they attract, and the fans they bring. It’s just great to be a part of it. Obviously when we fight the arena’s aren’t full but they start to fill out and by the time Kell comes out to “All of the Lights”, it’s buzzing.”

Ryder’s humbleness shouldn’t be mistaken for a lack of ambition; he has high goals but is determined to take each step on the ladder to achieve them.

“To win the world title is the dream, everyone dreams of it but I want to take my time. I want to win the English, the British, the Commonwealth, and the European; then one day I would like to win a world title. I’m 24 now, I’m a sensible boxer, I think I’ve got a good defense which should help me along the way. As long as I box to the best of my ability and don’t get involved in wars, I don’t think it’s impossible for me to do.”

John would like to start this journey by claiming the English title by the end of the year

“I was meant to face the English champion but it looks he’s going to vacate, so hopefully I get an opponent for that and get the English title. It would open a lot of doors and a lot of options would come from it. It would hopefully put me in the top 10 and in line a British title shot in the next year or so.”

He’s due back in the ring on September 8th at Alexandra Palace on the undercard of Darren Barker’s comeback.  “We’ve not really started our main sparring yet,  just a few little light spars with the amateurs. All the hard stuff we’ll pick it up in the next couple of weeks, get the hard spars in. There’s two possible (opponents) but I’ve not been told yet, I hope to find out in the next couple of weeks to start doing some research on them.”

John expects an atmosphere to rival some of the other big events he’s been on

“Darren’s fans are a loud bunch; he always brings a good crowd. It’ll be buzzing. There are another couple of good ticket sellers on the show; I think I bring a fairly good crowd so it should be a really good night.”
