Karim MayfieldKarim Mayfield wants Danny Garcia. In a no-frills statement made to ThaBoxingVoice, Mayfield made it clear that he wanted to fight Danny Garcia at any weight. He also alluded to the fact that Danny would be best served to run away from the challenge.

After Mayfield had pontificated on the appropriate ways in which fighters should and shouldn’t approach the time honored tradition of being cocky and unlikable, he issued his challenge to Danny.

“… Certainly would like to have Danny on a platter. Run Danny, run. I’ll fight’em at any weight.”
Well, then since we are tangentially on the subject of inappropriate cockiness… Karim Mayfield lost 2 of his 3 fights in 2014. He has 2 wins in the last two years. The combined record of the last two fighters Mayfield has defeated is 31-20.

Losses aren’t a terrible thing… I think they can say a lot about a fighter and his willingness to accept challenges. Guys can have a bad night or run into elite competition. It happens. Unfortunately, it is wins that build your reputation and sell tickets. Wins earn you fights against guys with titles. Right now, Karim Mayfield’s recent struggles have not earned him a shot at the champion.

That said, I wholeheartedly agree that Danny Garcia should run. Garcia has suffered public backlash for the fights he has taken (and not taken) over the past year. With his upcoming fight against Lamont Peterson on NBC, Danny is finally on the road to reputation recovery.

Can anyone imagine what kind of backlash there would be if Danny were to defeat Peterson and then take a fight against a Karim Mayfield that has some reputation-rebuilding of his own to do? Run Danny, run indeed.
