When it comes to who takes over for Floyd Mayweather as the pound-for-pound best, many have already named Roman Gonzalez as his successor. The Ring Magazine revealed their new pound-for-pound rankings with Roman Gonzalez as the best fighter in the world. One man who has been as dominant as Floyd Mayweather throughout the years has been heavyweight champion of the world, Wladimir Klitschko. However because he is a heavyweight he never has graced the top two or in many pound-for-pound rankings list. On a conference call this past week, Klitschko says he doesn’t take offense to not being called the best fighter in the world.
“I will never say that I’m the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter,” Klitschko told the media on a conference call. “I don’t want to compare myself with other guys. Some guys do some things better than me. You know, I’ve been a champ for a few years.”
Klitschko feels it’s on the onus of the people to call him the best, even if he defeats his foe on October 24th, Tyson Fury.
“Only the people can call you the king, not the person,” Klitschko said. “Unless you are Muhammad Ali because he’s the ultimate exception. Would I be pleased to be called the top pound-for-pound fighter? I guess so. You guys decide who will be No. 1. “
Even if he doesn’t get the credit, Klitschko fully expects Mayweather to return to chase the elusive 50-0 record.
I don’t think he’ll retire because he has his chance to be 50-0. Sometimes I start getting nervous after seeing the US Open with Serena Williams losing to an unranked opponent because there’s a lot of pressure. I kind of understand how he feels but I still believe he won’t retire. He’ll have at least one more fight.”
