Sergey Kovalev made short work of Nadjib Mohammedi in their scheduled 12 rounder for Kovalev’s IBF, WBO, WBA light heavyweight title in the HBO feature bout, live from Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mohammedi started off pretty decent with all things considered. He didn’t do much in creating offense, but he showed Kovalev that he wasn’t going to be intimidated. The first round was relatively slow by comparisons to the rest of the fight.

Kovalev had a scrapped up nose at the end of the 1st, but he was definitely the one putting in the work necessary for setting the stage.

Mohammedi tried to make it a gritty fight and it was clear that his best fight was a messy fight. In the middle of the 2nd, Kovalev landed several right hands that put Mohammedi in a vulnerable positon. The last right hand in succession landed on Mohammedi’s head and sent him to the canvas. He beat the count and survived the round.

In the 3rd, Kovalev was searching for the knockout and he smelled the end was close. Mohammedi was clearly ready to check out and he was just about done before Kovalev landed a straight right and then a left that sent Mohammedi to the canvas for good.

Kovalev scored the 25th knockout of his pro career and it was his 28th win as an undefeated fighter. We’ll see what’s next for the KO King, but it probably won’t be what we all want – a unification showdown with Adonis Stevenson. HBO was really pushing Yunieski Gonzalez, who lost a controversial decision against Jean Pascal in the evening’s co-feature.
