It seems like there may be a big fight on the horizon for once inactive super-middleweight champion Andre Ward. It’s not coming in the likes of a Carl Froch (who retired), or a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (who lost to Fonfora), or even Gennady Golovkin (who may have insisted in a catch-weight depending on who you talk to).

Instead, it may come a division north against light-heavyweight Champion, Sergey Kovalev.

On a conference call this week, Main Events’ Kathy Duva, who promotes Kovalev, stated that it’s not if it will happen but when,

We have been talking to Andre Ward’s people all week,” Duva said. “And I think we all agree the fight is going to happen. It is just a matter of when. The talks have been very amicable. They are deciding who they want to fight next, and we have Sergey’s schedule for his next few fights planned. By the end of next year, maybe a little sooner, you’re going to get to see that fight.”

Kovalev and company walked away from a purse bid for Adonis Stevenson’s WBC light-heavyweight title after Stevenson walked away from HBO to Showtime when a fight with Kovalev could have been made last year. But, it seems now Kovalev like Ward has a big fight on the horizon.

“We’re very happy about that because Sergey has made it clear that he wants to fight the very best out there. You’re talking about a fight between two guys who are both in the top five pound-for-pound in the world. The best fighting the best is what people want to see. That’s the kind of fight that gets everybody excited, the kind of fight that gets our blood moving. So we’re really hoping to be able to complete that deal within the foreseeable future.”
