Gennady Golovkin - Erislandy LaraWBA World light-middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (21-2, 12 KO’s) wants to return to the ring in October.

In June, he dominated former title contender Delvin Rodriguez (28-8-4, 16 KO’s). The agile Cuban lit up Rodriguez faster than a Cuban cigar, landing stinging combinations, knocking his opponent down in the sixth with a jab.

“The American Dream” quickly became the “American Nightmare” for Rodriguez, who simply got thrashed, with Lara connecting on 62% of his power shots.

Lara called out WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO’s), who also returns later this fall. The Cuban native has pursued a fight against the Kazakh superstar for the past year and a half.

However, there could be problems getting that fight made. As Boxing Scene pointed out, Golovkin is contracted to HBO and Lara fights on Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.

“I want to fight in October. I have told the people on my team that I want to fight in Miami, but I understand that there are other factors, such as television and desire doesn’t always go hand in hand with reality,” Lara told Boxing Scene’s George Ebro. “I can say that my people are talking about [a fight with Golovkin], and I’m crossing my fingers that it happens. On a scale from zero to 100, I’d say there is a 50 percent [chance it happens].”

“These are the type of fighters we must face, in a smart manner by making them miss many punches, doing everything to frustrate them, and force them to make mistakes. They do not know how to do anything but come forward.”

Golovkin has never faced a fighter with the pure boxing abilities of Lara. There is no doubt that Golovkin would face his toughest challenge in the fight. However, as long as both guys are fighting on separate networks, the fight will likely not happen for a while – if ever.
