Lara: I’m Not Golden Boy, I’m Done With Golden Boy

We all know there is something wrong with boxing, but only the enlightened know just how deep these issues run. The enlightened few are the ones that don’t allow personal bias to blur their vision, regardless of which fighter garners their loyalty. No matter what they are still vigilant when perceiving the nuances of boxing.

So no matter how deeply your alliances run, you have to recognize the fact that some fighters are treated infinitely better than others. That issue becomes even more apparent when the less regarded fighter is matched up with the over privileged pugilist and the promotion waves on as though we are none the wiser.

The promotional efforts Golden Boy is putting forth in the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Erislandy Lara junior middleweight bout on July 12th are almost enough to make you believe they hold both Canelo and Lara on an even keel. The truth is they don’t. Well, at least they haven’t up to this point. If there is a sudden change in the landscape amongst the powers that be at Golden Boy it is only because they know the dangers Lara presents in the fight with Alvarez and they’re trying to maintain some semblance with him should he disrupt Golden Boy’s hopes.

Whatever the outcome, it is obvious that Lara has felt disrespected for some time and it is my belief that he won’t easily forget his obscure role within the roster even if he pulls out the victory.

Lara made some comments at the New York press conference this week that suggest he isn’t just fighting for his place amongst the best in the division or for boxing supremacy. He definitely has an axe to grind with the company and I can’t blame him.

“Canelo is Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya is Golden Boy and I am not Golden Boy. The same way Oscar De La Hoya is Mexican, so is Canelo and that is why he is Golden Boy’s favorite son. That is why they wanted to build Canelo and maybe that is why they haven’t given me the push,” Lara said.

Lara feels like he doesn’t fit the ideal perception Golden Boy has for its fighters. But if Golden Boy is in the business of promoting the best fighters in boxing today, then they may want to get as cozy with Lara as humanly possible because win or lose Lara is on a mission in the sport and he is more than capable of beating just about anyone in and around the 154lb division.
