Floyd Mayweather Jr. v Marcos Maidana - Weigh-in“I thought Josesito was going to beat him, but Berto’s strong and quick and he caught him with good punches.”

Those were the words of Leo Santa Cruz as he was a spectator of the debut of PBC on Spike TV. Santa Cruz is waiting to get his shot on the Premier Boxing Championship Boxing Series, coming soon. He has already fought once this year but is looking forward to returning to the ring this year, likely in a showdown against Abner Mares at 126. Santa Cruz saw Mares fight two Saturday’s ago and said Mares wasn’t at his best.

“Yea I saw his fight,” explained Santa Cruz. “I don’t think he looked good. He said he was sick; maybe that’s what it was. But I did notice something was wrong with him. He didn’t look the same as all the time.”

For Santa Cruz to tango with Mares, he’d have to make the move from 122 to 126. It might be an unpopular move because many feel there is a lot left for him at 122 with the likes of Guillermo Rigondeaux and Scott Quigg still in the division. A lot of criticism has come Santa Cruz’ way with the fights he has made in the past year. It seems like Frampton or Rigondeaux won’t see Santa Cruz either at 122 as he says he will likely move to 126 to prepare for a Mares showdown.

“I think so,” explained Santa Cruz on a possible move up in weight. “Next fight I’m going to move up in weight already. I think after that one. I’m going to see how I feel. Then after that fight it’s him.”

Santa Cruz says he can’t wait for May 2nd and feels that Mayweather-Pacquiao is a great fight but feels Mayweather will win the bout.

“It’s a great fight but I think Mayweather is going to win. I think he’s smarter, faster, and he’s going to be on him to the punch all the time.”
