Luis Ortiz, the WBA interim heavyweight champion from Cuba, has officially bought out his contract with Golden Boy Promotions. Golden Boy released this statement, “Today, Golden Boy Promotions and Luis Ortiz amicably parted ways,” said Stefan Friedman, spokesperson for Golden Boy Promotions. “We are proud of the work that Golden Boy and Luis accomplished together culminating in his WBA Heavyweight Interim Championship victory and subsequent title defenses. We wish Luis and his team all the best in the future.”

Luis OrtizIn a move been rumored for months now, Luis Ortiz is officially a quasi-free agent in the promotion market. Whether he will co-sign with adviser Al Haymon, Eddie Hearn, or etc. is unknown at this time. Technically he was co-promoted with Dade promotions during his stint with GBP and Dade is the one who officially bought out his contract. Though co-promoting with the aforementioned promoters and advisers would be advantageous to Ortiz’s career.

Currently, he still scheduled to face Alexander Ustinov October 7th in Russia presumably.  However, with this news, fans and pundits alike, are looking at the future names he could be facing relatively soon i.e. Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua, and Tyson Fury. With Ortiz being 37 and having his window for maximizing his potential earning be diminished by the day, going after the biggest names as quickly as he can is the best course of action. Buying out his contract from Golden Boy was a huge step in his career. Let us hope he can finally get the matchups he deserves.
