It’s been almost a year since Abner Mares has been in the ring since his KO loss to Jhonny Gonzalez. Mares was on hand at the Arreola-Stiverne rematch and says a return is eminent.
“I have a scheduled fight for June 21st at the Stub Hub Center, not confirmed yet but if not that, I’ll probably be on the Canelo undercard. Either way I can’t wait to get back, it’s been almost a year since I fought,” explained Mares.
Mares suffered and injury in December of 2013 before his proposed rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez but says he is fully healed and ready to go.
“I’m good. I’m a 100 percent. I was going to fight in February against Jhonny Gonzalez but I’m good now,” stated Mares.
Numerous media outlets have reported that Mares has a new trainer in Virgin Hunter. For Mares and the continuation of his career, he says change was needed.
“With Jhonny, I just went in there brawling but it wasn’t even against Johnny, I was having a lot of problems but at the end of the day he caught me. I didn’t train as properly or as good. But things are taken care of. I’m going to be the same Abner Mares, soon to be 4 time world champion.”
