Floyd MayweatherInstead of paying $100 for Mayweather-Pacquiao, boxing fans are going to be able to watch Floyd Mayweather’s latest title defense for a discount.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, fans who want to purchase the Mayweather-Berto fight on pay-per-view will have to pay $64.95/$74.95HD.

Although it’s a $25 discount from the Pacquiao fight, the pay-per-view is still the same price as the Mayweather-Alvarez fight, which at the time shattered the all-time record for highest-grossing pay-per-view fight, generating $150 million in revenue from 2.2 million pay-per-view buys.

This fight is not going to bring anything close to what Mayweather-Alvarez generated. Yes, it’s being billed as the last fight of Mayweather’s storied career, but how many people believe he’s going to retire?

As we reported in late July, Mayweather is in negotiations with Showtime/CBS to sign a three-fight extension – we haven’t heard anything more on the matter – and we will keep you updated if we receive further information.

Given that Berto has lost three of his last six, including a 12th round TKO defeat to Jesus Soto Karass and a unanimous decision loss to Robert Guerrero – I would take at least $20.00 off and make HD $54.99.

However, even with the extra discount, some fans won’t even think that’s enough to get them to watch the fight.

No one knows what’s going to go down on September 12th. Mayweather could reject the extension, and this could be his last fight. In either case, I’m expecting Andre Berto to be Andre Berto.

As for Floyd, can we expect a brawl to finish off with a bang, or are we going to see the defensive-minded fighter tag his man repeatedly with right hands? Berto is notorious for taking a lot of damage to his right eye.

I hope ‘Pretty Boy’ returns in Terminator Salvation like fashion. Just when you’re starting to get into your groove and getting your weapons ready, boom! It’s going to be a war.

Now, Mayweather won’t be ripping his head off or tossing him around the ring, but he may still have some corrosive material in those hands, and we’ll see if Berto can take it.
