Floyd Mayweather Katie CouricWe all knew that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao would bring out all of the mainstream news outlets and journalists that don’t usually cover the sport of boxing. However, heading into their May 2nd mega fight, Floyd and Manny are getting coverage from some of the biggest news outlets and reporters that mainstream media has to offer.

The most recent coverage by a media heavyweight was Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric’s interview with Mayweather at his Las Vegas gym.

Couric covered a variety of topics, most of them were the previously covered storylines that usually get rehashed by journalists unacquainted with the boxing beat. Still, Couric did get some pretty interesting gab from Mayweather.

Mayweather told Katie Couric about his tag as the richest athlete and how he lives up to that moniker. He said that “the lifestyle is real.” She asked Floyd about his celebrity friends, specifically whether or not Justin Bieber will accompany him to the ring on fight night. “Hopefully everyone is there, hopefully the world will be watching,” Mayweather responded.

Floyd was asked about Pacquiao and his thoughts on him as an opponent.

“Pacquiao is a solid competitor. He’s a guy that’s going to push me and bring the best out of Floyd “Money” Mayweather and that’s what we want and that’s what everyone wants to see.

“[Pacquiao is] kind of reckless. His moves are not thought about. Good speed,” Mayweather said of his May 2nd opponent.

Floyd later described his training camp and the day to day regimine being utilized. Much has been made about Mayweather’s extensive training and whether or not he is overtraining to some degree given his age and the assumptions that his legs are not what they used to be.

Based on his descriptions, it would seem as though Mayweather’s training camp is pretty typical. Although, Floyd did say that chopping trees is part of his training routine, describing it as a “throwback workout.”

Couric questioned whether or not Floyd is tired, alluding to the presumption that he may be overtraining. “I’ve been doing this my whole life. I’ve dedicated my life to the sport of boxing and it’s great to be where I’m at today,” Floyd said.

Floyd’s issues with domestic violence were brought into question during the interview, specifically regarding his conviction that lead to a 2012 prison stint, as well as his controversial comments on Ray Rice’s own domestic violence issues.

“I’m black. I’m rich. And I’m outspoken. Those are three strikes right there,” Mayweather offered up.

However, Floyd remained firm on his position regarding his guilty plea and how it wasn’t an admission of guilt as much as it was a means of quickly resolving the matter with the least amount of collateral damage.

Floyd told Couric that he did not beat Josie Harris, the mother of three of his children, but did admit to “restraining a woman on drugs.”
