On September 14th, the pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather will square up against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The fight has been dubbed “The One,” as the winner will undoubtedly be crowned boxing’s king. Mayweather is coming off a recent 12 round boxing clinic with Robert “The Ghost’ Guerrero. In that fight, Mayweather hurt his right hand after repeatedly delivering power shots with accuracy to Guerrero. When asked about the hand he stated, “My hand is healed.”
In the past, Mayweather has failed to show consistency, fighting about once a year and even retiring several times. However, Mayweather recently became one of the highest paid athletes, by signing a 30 month, six-fight contract with Showtime, adding, “I want to stay active, I want to stay busy. I want to give the fans more Floyd Mayweather.”
The 36 year old Mayweather will be in the ring with a 23 year old Canelo, who seems confident that he can be the first one to crack the Mayweather code; Mayweather however, doesn’t seem concerned. “I know what it takes when it’s a fight of this magnitude. Canelo is 22; I’ve been at the top since (he) was five years old.” When asked if he feels concerned about his opponent’s youth, Mayweather stated, “Floyd Mayweather always finds a way to win.”
Mayweather and Canelo are currently embarking on a ten city media tour starting in New York and ending in Los Angeles. In about a week, all the press conferences will be over and Mayweather is excited to get back to training. “I can wait to get back to work with my Uncle Roger; to work with my father.” Both fighters will be answering a lot of questions between now and the fight. Will Mayweather’s experience and poise beat Canelo’s youth and power? On September 14th, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the fan’s most important question will be answered— who is “The One?”
