Melissa Hernandez,On Saturday night, the final chapter in Melissa “Huracán Shark” Hernandez career came to a close with an eighth round unanimous decision loss to Layla McCarter on the undercard of Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola. The bout served as Hernandez first fight of the year and her fourth fight with McCarter.
Throughout her career, Hernandez has fought many of the biggest names in the industry and win or lose she entertained. From her dancing on her way to the ring to her willingness to go all out when the leather starts to fly she proved herself to be a must watch fighter but the lack of currency being offered to her was a bigger blow than any she had received during any of her fights.
Stepping away from the ring now seems to be the best thing Hernandez can do for her body to heal and for her to be mentally content. While it is a bitter departure due to the treatment women’s boxing receives, Hernandez encourages women to keep punching on in her social media post on her retirement.
“Dear boxing fans,
Tonight was my last fight in boxing. I’ve had a hell of a run. Thank you to all my fans, friends and, family but also I’m sooooo happy it’s fucking over. Thank you boxing but fuck you boxing for never paying me my worth.
All you chicks out there still boxing keep punching it’s a hell of a ride.
Thank you, peace out !!!!!!”
