Michael “The Artist” Perez has been rumored to be fighting the likes  Lucas Matthysse and Adrien Broner on the card September 6th in Cincinnati. The end result is a mix and match of names and likely a bout with someone he was going to fight before in Brooklyn, Carlos Molina.

“We couldn’t make it happen and we couldn’t settle on some things. I’m still fighting on the same card. The offer that was brought to me was Carlos Molina, same guy I was supposed to fight at Barclays. It’s a fight that would get me more exposure and a fight that would be televised,” stated Perez in a phone interview with ThaBoxingVoice.com.

Seems like Perez wanted to land on one of the bigger names on the card but to him, it seemed like Showtime wouldn’t approve him as an opponent

“Adrien Broner was also presented to me and we would have taken it too,” explained Perez. ” Showtime didn’t approve it for whatever reason. Instead we’re offered  Carlos Molina, a guy that didn’t want to fight me. But then he fights Amir Khan on Showtime and then he fights Adrien Broner on Showtime. But then they don’t do it for me? If I have to go through Carlos Molina to prove to Showtime I’m a world class fighter, then that’s what I’ll do.”

Perez feels the backing by Showtime isn’t there for him as they are for others because of his loss to Omar Figueroa, but feels he has rebounded nicely and feels he deserves an opportunity.

“I have an idea, after my 1st loss everything went downhill.I came back from the Figueroa loss and won the Maldonado fight and won it convincingly. I’m ranked number 7 under the WBA. I moved up and I’m moving forward. I just need the opportunity to do it,” explained Perez.

During the interview, Perez seemed annoyed that Showtime had brought up Molina as an opponent.

“It was brought to me, I accepted it,” stated Perez. “I need to be televised and promoted on TV. People got to see me, the world has to see me in action. When I do get the big fights, they’ll know who I am. I never said no to nobody. I always say yeah to who the put in front of me.”

Recently Perez made a change in his career, moving camp west and joining up with trainer Robert Garcia in Oxnard. To Perez the change was needed.

“It was a decision that I made. As a young fighter, I need to learn. I made the move to better my career. I changed the training, it’s great sparring. I’m sparring the top guys like Brandon Rios. I’m in a better environment. I’m in Robert Garcia’s gym and its great.”

The goal is clear at 140 for Perez. “We want Mauricio Herrera next, then we fight Broner or Matthysse for a bigger fight.”

Now while he says he’s fighting Molina, a call was made to Molina’s manager, Frank Espinoza who said he has not heard of that fight and that his side wasn’t offered the fight yet.
