Miguel Cotto’s choice of opponents called into question

Miguel CottoMiguel Cotto has made headlines within the last couple weeks which has left me along with other boxing fans scratching their heads. Last week talk surfaced about “Bam Bam” Brandon Rios being approached about a possible fight with Cotto for Cotto’s first fight after last year’s disappointment with Saul Alvarez. Rios declined the fight as it was too short of notice and Diego Chaves was also being considered.

While I enjoy watching these fighters perform in the ring, their performances lately have not been impressive enough to garner such a fight. They are more of a name at the moment for Cotto to get himself into position for something bigger but against these versions of Rios and Chaves does not seem like it will do much for him at this moment.

One of the hottest names in the welterweight division at the moment is Jessie Vargas. Vargas badly hurt Timothy Bradley in their fight, and he could have eventually stopped him (we will never know as we were robbed of what could have happened) and came back even better when he took on and defeated highly touted Sadam Ali last month. Since defeating Ali, Vargas has continued to call for his rematch with Bradley which will more than likely not happen and has also called out Cotto.

So what does Cotto think about the fight? Apparently not much because he and his team turned down the Vargas fight. A majority of the top names in the welterweight division currently have plans that would not fit in with Cotto’s fight for the upcoming months. Even though Vargas is still building himself up in the division it would make for an entertaining fight for Cotto and boxing fans.

With his options being as slim as they are Cotto needs to make a decision (which may be indeed Chaves) sooner than later because being inactive at this stage in his career is not good for him. We understand it is not about pride anymore as Cotto is a prize fighter but squandering time like this, and fighting opponents that are on a downward slide (whether permanent or temporary) does not make any sense.
