Boxing rivalries usually last no longer than the build up to the fight until the fights end and that is when it involves just the fighters.

There has been a feud that has been going on for over two decades between a former fighter and one of his former trainers. That feud involves Mike Tyson and Teddy Atlas.

The feud began when Tyson was just 16 years old and according to him, he grabbed the butt of an 11 year old girl who was related to Atlas. Atlas then proceeded to put a gun to Tyson’s head and threatened to kill him if he ever touched anyone in his family ever again.
The two seemed to bury the hatchet this Friday during an event that Tyson was promoting on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights when Tyson approached Atlas and asked him for forgiveness

“He behaved like a man, what can I say,” said Teddy Atlas. “He came over, extended his hand and asked me if I’d shake it and said, ‘You’re not still mad at me, are you? I wish you wouldn’t be.’ … I give him credit for showing a gentleman’s side.”

After the fights were over Tyson opened up on the issue.

“I knew that there was a possibility that I would be here with Teddy and I didn’t have a good thought in mind about that at first, because I’m negative and I’m dark. And I wanna do bad stuff. I wanna hang out in this neighborhood alone (inside his head). That’s dangerous to hang out in this neighborhood alone up here, right? It wants to kill everything. It wants to kill me, too.”

Tyson continued on about attending AA meetings about his addictions and trying to mend broken bonds from everyone he has hurt in the past.

“I went to my AA meeting. I had to make a discussion, check out what we gonna do. So I explained to them, my fellow alcoholics and junkies, that I was gonna deal with this certain situation here, and I explained the feelings that I evoked from it. Almost like, um, something like a Hatfield and McCoy, I kinda explained to them. I made the right decision. I made Cus proud of me. I made myself proud of me. I hate myself. I’m trying to kill myself. I hate myself a lot, but I made myself proud of myself, and I don’t do that much. And I was happy I did that. I haven’t drank or took drugs in six days, and for me that’s a miracle. I’ve been lying to everybody else that think I was sober, but I’m not. This is my sixth day. I’m never gonna use again.”

It has been a long battle with his demon’s and he is trying to turn himself into a better person but temptation will always be there. Tyson’s announcement gained him respect and applause from those in attendance and as a person that knows people with addictions and the struggles that they go through I wish him all the best.
