    ThaBoxingVoice spoke with 2012 Boxing Writers, trainer of the year Robert Garcia to discuss Mikey Garcia, who as well as being his brother is one of the top fighters out his training stable.

    He initially recapped on Mikey Garcia’s recent, impressive and dominant victory over Orlando Salido for the WBO Featherweight championship. When asked how that felt sharing the moment with his family he proudly declared;

    “It was great, to have my father around myself when I was world champion and now my little brother, two world champions out of the same family, my dad working with both of us, it was emotional.”

    In following the footsteps of his brother Robert and their father Eduardo, through the boxing ranks, Mikey has catapulted himself towards stardom, with an exciting combination of technical precision and blistering power. The victory against the tough and seasoned Salido was an impressive showcase of his skills and potential. Robert didn’t seem surprised by this, but was keen to maintain caution.

    “Mikey has the talent to do that to Orlando Salido, to many other fighters. But he’s got to stay on his game. He can’t lose control, he can’t lose focus, once he loses focus he’s in danger,” he said.

    As impressive as the victory was, the ending was slightly unsatisfactory, following Salido suffering multiple knock downs throughout the fight; the bout was halted in the 8th round by doctors as Garcia suffered a broken nose following an accidental head butt.

    Mikey Garcia had been very vocal before the Salido fight that he wanted to face Yuriorkis Gamboa if successful, but when asked if this was in the plans or if following the controversial end to the Salido fight, if a rematch was under consideration Robert Garcia had a coy response

     “It’s all up to Cameron Dunkin, he’s the manager and Top Rank are our promoters. Whatever they bring to us, that what were going to do.”
