Moises Benitez is a man making his debut on August 2nd, but for him the goals in the sport of boxing are much more grandiose than just one single match. “I want to be face of San Jose boxing”Benitez said when reflecting on the region he is represents. Benitez is a product of David“Sarge” Neeleman, who runs Dreamland Boxing in San Jose, CA. “It [they gym] doesn’t really have anyone who is the face, so that is my goal.”

“[Benitez] gives lots of guys problems, big time guys,”Neeleman said as he looked over smiling at Benitez. “It was hard for him to get fights in the amateurs.”Neeleman continued as he riffled off a list of gyms that he would look at to get bouts. Benitez is very humble for all his accomplishments as he explains that “….I just like to bring the fight to guys.”It is Benitez’s pressure style that has already sparked the interest of Robert Guerrero who brought Benitez in to his camp three years ago to prepare for his fight against Vincente Escobedo.

“I have almost thirty fights in the amateurs, but really it is the experience with pros like Robert [Guerrero] that gave me the most experience,”Benitez continued. “I learned a lot of different things and I was doing pretty good against [Guerrero]…it was a huge confidence booster. I was give him a lot of trouble and problems as well.”

As for his opponent on August 2nd, Percy Peterson (0-2), Benitez is hoping to make quick work of his opponent. “I believe I can stop him and I believe it can happen in the first round,”Benitez said when asked about his prediction. Benitez, a junior welterweight who appears large for his frame, is hoping to stay at junior welterweight, but at the same time as David Neeleman explained, “Let’s see how this fight goes and how the weight cut goes and we will take it from there.”Benitez has been sparring middleweights and having a lot of success, meaning a move up in weight to the highly lucrative realm of welterweight may be in the cards in a few years, but nothing is set in stone. “For the time, right now, all I am thinking about is being a junior welterweight,”Benitez explained.

“I have worked with a lot of people, I even use to help Javier Mendez [famed Mixed Martial Arts training of the American Kickboxing Academy] and those guys the boxing stuff and they had great success. I really like what [Benitez] has, he listens, works hard and has all the potential in the world. It’s going to be fun to see where he can go from here,”Neeleman remarked with a smile as he tapped Benitez on the shoulder.
