In a fight for Mid-Atlantic bragging rights in the super featherweight division, Omar “Super O” Douglas (16 – 0, 11 KO’s) defeated Frank De Alba (17 – 2) via majority decision in a ten round affair.
The fight last week, which aired nationally on Fox Sports 1 via Premier Boxing Champions, was a gritty battle as the B-side De Alba hung in tough and gave the young Douglas valuable ring experience, as it was only the second time in his pro career he went ten.
Fighting out of the “First State”, specifically Wilmington Delaware, Douglas is an accomplished amateur who at the young age of 24 is certainly one to keep an eye out for. After the De Alba fight concluded, Thaboxingvoice’s own Joshua Grayfer caught up with Douglas for an interview.
“Anybody my people put in front of me I will dominate them” proclaimed the confident Douglas regarding other foes in the 130-pound division. “I’m taking it one step at a time, and later on, I want to compete for a world title, so I want to keep on stepping it up every fight”.
Fortunately for Douglas, being part of the PBC universe and having the backing of powerful manager Al Haymon should facilitate the opportunities Douglas needs to eventually challenge for a world title belt. The exposure PBC provides over the multiple television networks that air the series is certainly appreciated by “Super O”, “ I love the position I’m in, being part of PBC is a great thing, a lot of dudes would die to be in the position I’m in”.
To date, Douglas has displayed a diverse skill set inside the ring. He does have a healthy knockout percentage, he pressures his opponents but remains disciplined and poised during heated moments.
In 2016, we will continue to track Omar’s progress as he should start being matched up with the better-known competition of his division. Two current 130-pound world champions, Javier Fortuna and Jose Pedraza, under the Haymon universe, are potential targets Douglas can eventually meet. This year will be pivotal for “Super O” and from what we’ve been hearing, he’ll be ready.
