It has been just over a year since Juan Carlos Burgos fought for the WBO super featherweight title against then champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez. The fight ended in a very controversial draw. Burgos attacked Martinez’ body and did came close to putting his opponent out had he not run out of time.

As life does, both fighters continued fighting on. Burgos fought only once since the Martinez fight. That fight took place late July of 2013 and Burgos had yet another draw. Martinez on the other hand fought twice more that year. He handed undefeated prospect Diego Magdaleno the first loss of his career and then took on rising star Mikey Garcia. Martinez was knocked out from vicious shots to the body by Garcia.

On January 25th Juan Carlos Burgos will get the opportunity to fight for a title that has slipped through his grasp once before when he takes on Mikey Garcia. For Burgos it will be the chance to right a wrong and take his title back even though it is not the same opponent whom he had faced before and should be more of a challenge.Despite the quality of opposition that Burgos is going into the ring against he is very confident he will walk away victorious and he believes his power will be a key element in victory.

“In the Martinez fight, where he got knocked down, we saw some things we can exploit,” said Burgos. “I have power. More power than Martinez and I am going to use that to my advantage. Martinez showed us something when he knocked Garcia down.”
