Opponent change not fazing “King” Gabe Rosado

On June 1st “King” Gabriel Rosado has a date. He has been preparing for a fight with ring veteran Joel Julio. After an impressive win over Jesus Soto-Karass on NBC Sports Network in January, this seemed like a formidable match up for Rosado; who is the main event on a card that NBC and Main Events created to showcase him again after his performance as a co-main. However, upon news that was not at all surprising to Rosado, as he revealed to me in an interview, Julio dropped out of the fight. Therefore, leaving an opening for a new opponent.

Sechew Powell will be stepping into the ring in place of Joel Julio, but it is no big deal in the Rosado camp. “The only adjustment I have to make is preparing to face a southpaw, other than that my game plan is intact”. Rosado also feels the southpaw experience will be beneficial to his run at 154.  “The division is run by southpaws, so this is a primer” said the “King” referencing Austin Trout, and Sergio Martinez to name a few.

While Rosado recognizes Powell’s skills as a boxer he maintains that he plans to bring the fight to Sechew. He plans to walk him down and fight his fight against the last minute replacement. Sometimes it can trip a fighter up when the opponent is changed with a little less than a month until fight night but “King” Gabe is happy with the change. “Sechew is a legitimate 154 pound fighter, a former world champion, a win over him will open more doors than a win over Joel Julio”, says Rosado.

Quite frankly I think he’s got a point. With some good wins lately, Gabriel is starting to make noise in the 154 pound division, and he believes that after a triumph over Sechew Powell no one will want to fight him. “Everyone will start to be protected,” he says.

SO what’s next after June 1st? “After I get the win, why not get the title shot?” Perhaps the winner of Austin Trout v. Delvin Rodriguez, or even a shot at Russian WBO champion Dmitry Pirog. As for now, I think we can rest assured that there will be a hell of a fight on June First! Be sure to tune in to NBC Sports Network.
