If there was anyone to be in line to be the next ‘Golden Boy’ in boxing, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fits the moniker if he hasn’t already taken the title from his promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Alvarez proved himself to be a draw in boxing when there was a packed house at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to witness his beat down over a game but over-matched in size opponent, Josesito Lopez this past September. While there was a much more important fight taking place a mile away when Sergio Martinez decisioned Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., Alvarez still packed the stands for his fight.

The boxing world wants to know, what’s next for Canelo and will he actually take on an opponent who matches him not only in skill, but in size. His promoter Oscar De La Hoya continues to reiterate the same 3 names for Canelo’s return date next year. “It’s still Cotto, Mayweather or Martinez. I think Martinez is out of the question because he’s fighting in April in Argentina,” stated De La Hoya.

While Martinez might not be available at the moment and has an all but certain rematch lined up with Chavez Jr., next September, Miguel Cotto fights this Saturday against a bigger, younger, fresher opponent in Austin Trout. Canelo will be an interested observed according to De La Hoya. “Canelo wants to go to Cotto’s fight in December in New York because he wants him to be an opponent. So whatever Canelo wants we‘re going to get him.”

Then there the biggest money fight of them all in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather who hasn’t fought since his decision victory over Miguel Cotto last May and is out free after his jail stint will be looking for an opponent next year. While Robert Guerrero throw his name in the Mayweather sweepstakes his decision victory over Andre Berto this past weekend, Canelo Alvarez and Mayweather is a much bigger event, bigger spectacle, and bigger business.

While Mayweather-Pacquiao is still the biggest fight in the sport economically, both fighters are not what they once were in 2009, when the fight was at its peak. Most hardcore fight fans have already come to an understanding that the fight may never happen and even if it did, won’t be as competitive as it could have been 3 years ago. So for some, the interest is peeking for a Mayweather-Alvarez fight. That’s a notion De La Hoya agrees with. “I think the type of fight that Mayweather is; he (Canelo) wants that fight because he wants to best fight and biggest event possible. I think a Canelo Mayweather fight, the event, is the biggest in boxing .They’re not talking about Pacquiao-Mayweather anymore; people are talking about Canelo-Mayweather. It could be huge.”
