Haitian-born boxer Jean Pascal listens aSergey Kovalev might get his shot at a Canadian light heavyweight after all. Except it might not be the one you’re expecting. For 2014, the fight every fan wanted was a showdown between Sergey Kovalev and Haitian born Canadian Adonis Stevenson.

Stevenson signed with Al Haymon and jumped to Showtime and the fight never came to fruition. We thought Stevenson jumped to Showtime to secure a fight with Bernard Hopkins. However, it was Hopkins that turned the tide and jumped to HBO to fight Kovalev.

Kovalev defeated Hopkins decisively on November 8th and in turn was the holder of 3 belts. A fight with Adonis Stevenson who holds the lineal title and the 4th belt in the division would make for a fight for the undisputed champion of the 175 lb. division. However, boxing politics may be in the way of that and many still wonder if Stevenson wants that fight.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael Jean Pascal, who fights next week is in consideration to be Kovalev’s next opponent next year.

“There have been some discussions,” Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s promoter told ESPN.com regarding a possible Kovalev-Pascal fight. “But of course we have an IBF mandatory to consider as well.”

The IBF mandatory is Nadjib Mohammedi who is also promoted by Kathy Duva’s Main Events. A fight like that might not garner much interest from HBO or the fans alike in the manner that a fight with Pascal would.

Pascal who is a draw in Montreal tried to secure a fight as the mandatory to Stevenson’s WBC belt but terms could not be agreed upon. A fight between Pascal and Stevenson would be huge in Canada but it seems that both sides are far apart financially.

So an interesting prospect is a Kovalev-Pascal fight in Canada should Pascal win next week.
