Coming into his second fight at Welterweight, and for the first time defending his new WBA Welterweight title, Adrien “The Problem” Broner (27-0 22KOs) takes on the hard-punching Argentinean Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (34-3 31KOs) at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio on December 14th. Broner won the WBA title in June when he got the better end of split decision against Paulie Malignaggi.

The build up to the Malignaggi fight was not lacking in controversy and so to, was the conclusion. Fans thought Broner would destroy Malignaggi but when that did not happen; many thought Malignaggi’s activity was enough to win the fight. Being criticized by media and fans in and outside the ring is nothing new for the 24 year old fighter, and he feels no matter what he does, nothing will change.

“It doesn’t matter what I do. I just feel like I never get the credit that I deserve, so even when I win this fight, and I’m going to win this fight in a spectacular fashion.” Broner went on to say, “They’re never going to do it no matter if I go in there and knock Maidana out in the first round; they’re going to find some way to criticize, to criticize me. I just do me. I just get my victories and keep moving on with my career.”

Maidana has been in some back and forth battles and it’s because of his willingness to go to war; fans have been talking about this fight since it was signed. Maidana has lost to top fighters like Amir Khan and Devon Alexander but neither of those fighters were able to stop him. Although Broner is coming into the fight with a chip on his shoulder, he is not going to detract from the game plan.

“I don’t go up to a fight looking for the knockout. If the knockout presents itself, then you know I got to take it. But, I’m going to go in there focused and once he shows me what he brings to the table, I’m going to do what I got to do to get my victory. I can tell you one thing, that guy better be prepared. I just hope he’s in shape and he’s ready to fight to death the 12 rounds.”

The fight with Maidana was originally supposed to be Broner’s first headlining Pay-Per View but after a few weeks it was announced that it was going to air on Showtime and Broner sees the positive in the switch. “It don’t matter, because I’m a pay-per-view fighter, so they’ve got to come see me anyway. As long as I keep doing what I do, they got to come see me. I’m okay. This is a pay-per-view fight right here for free, so you all should be happy.”

Prior to his move up to Welterweight, Broner was the WBO Super Featherweight Champion and most recently the WBC Lightweight Champion. Broner currently still holds the WBC Lightweight title and although there had been some talks about stripping him of the title should he not defend it; the WBC still has yet to do so. His last title defense of his WBC title will be over a year ago by the time he enters the ring against Maidana but with the lightweight division starting to heat up, Broner has not ruled out moving back down, he stated, “If it didn’t come out my mouth, then don’t ever believe anything you heard through the grapevine. Right now, I’m focused on December 14th with defending my welterweight title with Marcos Maidana. Anything after that, we’ll talk about after the fight.”
