Fresh off of his title winning effort last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, newly crowned WBO Middleweight Champion, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin spoke with us here at Tha Boxing Voice about his victory over former champion, Hassan N’Dam.
In what turned out to be the fight of the night, Quillin knocked down N’Dam six times (twice in each rd 4, 6 & 12). Regardless of the knockdowns, the match up was still very competitive in spots, and one could argue that N’Dam won the rounds that he wasn’t knocked down in. “I was slow at the starting period but when I started to catch my rhythm and get into my rhythm then I just felt like I have to coast from there and watch for things and be more up on it. He was kind of awkward, and figuring him out was kind of a little tough because he was doing things that I wasn’t used to, but Eric Brown (Qullin’s trainer) was communicating with me and that’s what helped me stick to the game plan,” Quillin said.
Ever since relocating to the California area in 2010 and training at the famous Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, Quillin has steadily improved and evolved as a fighter. He has always been known as a very big puncher ever since his amateur days but now that the level opposition has risen, “Kid Chocolate” can no longer rely solely on his power alone. “I’ve learned how to set up the power now by working at the “Wild Card” (Gym). I’m very fortunate to be working with the trainer that I’m working with in Eric Brown and working on these things that are going to make me a better champion and maybe unified champion one day,” he explained.
Now that Qullin is the champion, he’s not looking to call out anyone anymore. “I’m the hunted now. There’s going to be guys out there that‘s going to want what I got and they’re going to have to come hard to come and get it because I ain’t letting nobody just come over here and walk over and take something so easy.” He doesn’t seem to be too concerned about who his next opponent is. Quillin went on to say, “Regardless of who I fight I just have to put on my show. That’s all I have to do. Whoever I fight I just have to be prepared and ready.”
Being raised in Brooklyn, it would make perfect sense for Quillin to come back to the Barclays Center and defend his title which is something that he has said he would love to do possibly in the future. But, he also went on to say, “Kid Chocolate would love to fight in New Jersey. Kid Chocolate would to fight in Cuba maybe one day. Kid Chocolate would just love to travel the world and be able to inspire those around me.”
It has been a long hard journey for Quillin to finally achieve his dream of becoming a world champion, but the road doesn’t end there. He has more goals and dreams ahead of him on the horizon. “The foundation has been laid now in becoming a world champion, now we got to finish building the house for my legacy.”
