LOS ANGELES, CALIF.) – Andre Berto  (Winter Haven, Fla.) underwent successful surgery with highly-respected physician, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles to repair a ruptured subscapularis tendon in his right shoulder. Dr. ElAttrache declared the surgery a success following the three and a half hour operation, during which he discovered that Berto had completely torn the tendon from top to bottom.

During his post operative visit with Berto, he explained that the severity of the tear prevented him from being able to punch with any type of power with his right hand as well as fully lift his arm to protect himself from incoming punches. Berto is slated to begin rehabilitation in approximately six weeks and could resume boxing training in as soon as four months.

“I am happy to have the surgery behind me and hear that everything went well,” Berto said. “I’m going to rest up and focus all my energy on my recovery so that I can return to the ring full force in 2014.”

The former two-time world champion sustained the tendon tear in the second round of his July 27th match-up with Jesus Soto-Karass in San Antonio.
