Poor Sod – Rigondeaux Booed in Macao despite 1st Round TKO Victory

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and Super Bantamweight king Guillermo Rigondeaux was back in the ring for the first time this year in what was initially and correctly recognised as a mismatch against little known Thai fighter Sod Kokietgym.

Rigondeaux has been a victim of his own greatness, a fighter who rightfully stated earlier in the week that he doesn’t make mistakes but after being booed for being “too defensive” in the past, had promised to fight more aggressive in this one and he kept his word, landing a flush left hand just ten seconds into the round.

It was one of those shots that sounded as hard as it looked. Then 138 seconds in Kokietgym got caught again this time with a good right hand which caused him to rush forward to land a shot in return only to clash heads with the Cuban and immediately dropped to the floor, clearly in a lot of discomfort. The ref called an accidental headbutt and almost instantly as he called “Time in”. Rigondeaux landed a huge two shot combination a hard right followed by a mean looking short left hook, dropping the Thailand fighter to the canvas and the fight was over, the shot was legal but was reminiscent of Mayweather’s controversial KO victory over Ortiz.

The MC announced the victory to boos from the usually reserved Macao fans.
