On April 13th Guillermo Rigondeaux proved his worth and silenced his critics with his greatest victory to date over Nonito Donaire. Leading up to the fight many in the boxing community my self included felt that this fight was a mismatch and that Rigondeaux was unproven and had a suspect chin. Twelve rounds later we all ate our words.

Rigondeaux had an amazing amateur career with over 400 fights and 2 Olympic gold medals but the amateurs are nothing like the pros.

As far as his chin goes it was sure put to the test. Even though he was shaken up by light hitters and went down from a Donaire left hook, his chin passed the test thoroughly.

So where does Rigondeaux go from here? There is plenty of competition that he could face in his weight division or he could possibly move up in weight. He may also be able to make a little more money, but the fact that he does not have a style that pleases casual fans means he will not be able to fill seats. Either way he is deserving.

He has gone a long way since defecting fromCubaand has gone an even longer way in just a few fights. He now has a credible victory in which he proved himself. Prior to his victory over Donaire, Rico Ramos was the only other recognizable name on his ledger. Should a rematch with Donaire be in store or could he face Donaire’s stable mate Mikey Garcia at 126 pounds? One thing for sure is, he has proven his worth.
