Over the last few months, the 122 lb. division has become a division full of names and pound for pound talent. With the likes of Nonito Donaire and Abner Mares  moving up in weight and claiming vacant titles, along with Cuban stand out Guillermo Rigondeaux claiming his first world title after only 9 fights,  boxing fans hope that sooner or later, these names collide.

Donaire had a conference call this week for his upcoming fight with IBF titlist Jeffrey Mathebula. On that conference call, Donaire stakes claim that he wants to be the man at 122 pounds and would like to be the undisputed champion of the division claiming all the belts. By doing that, Donaire must dethrone Mathebula and then go after the two other titlists in the division, Mares and Rigondeaux. While Mares and Donaire might be the biggest money fight in the division, it might have difficulty being made because of rival networks and rival promoters. Rigondeaux is seemingly an easier deal to make as he and Donaire are both promoted by Top Rank. The CEO of Top Rank, Bob Arum has hinted that Rigondeaux might land on the September 15th Pay-Per-View clash between Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Sergio Martinez.

Donaire has been in the media and said a fight with Rigondeaux is a fight he wants, and Rigondeaux has taken notice. Translating through his advisor, Rigondeaux reached out to TheBoxingVoice.com and stated,”I’m a champion at 122, and I’m the boss at 122. He fought for a vacant title, while I beat a reigning champion.”

Rigondeaux also got wind that Donaire was using vulgar language through the media when mentioning his name.  Mild mannered Rigondeaux responded with a simple statement, “Please don’t curse Nonito Donito (laughing), you’re going to curse yourself if you ever fight me.”

At the current moment Rigondeaux confirms that they are exploring options for his next opponent and that September 15th is the most likely return date for the WBA champion. But he wanted to let the public know of his current aspirations. “He’s not the only one that wants all the belts. I do too! I’m coming after all his belts, no matter what weight class he’s in. Enough with the talking Nonito Donito, sign up for your ass whooping, any place, any time!”
