Robert GarciaAt this time last year, Robert Garcia was beginning camp for Jesus Cuellar’s successful title defense against Vic Darchinyan. Fast forward 12 months later and now Garcia will be in the opposite corner preparing his newest pupil, Abner Mares, to take Cuellar’s WBA featherweight title when the two meet June 25th.
Garcia and Cuellar parted ways shortly before the beginning of camp for the Argentinian’s fight with Jonathan Oquendo in December. The parting came as a shock to Garcia as he explains to ThaBoxingVoice how he discovered his dismissal.
“I was surprised the way it happened. We finished our last fight against Darchinyan together. Everything was good, we celebrated, I didn’t think anything was wrong.
“Then comes training camp for his next fight and I don’t hear from him or his manager. Honestly if they have a reason, I still don’t know the reason why they chose not to train with me,” said Garcia.
Despite remaining uncertain why he was relieved of his duties and feeling a little disrespected, Garcia insists there are no hard feelings between himself and his former student.
“I don’t have anything against him, so it can not be personal.” vocalized Garcia. The 2012 BWAA trainer of the year added “It’s just work. I’m with Abner Mares now, it happens to be were fighting Cuellar, so I got to train Abner to do his best and come out with the win.”
Abner Mares will challenge Jesus Cuellar for his WBA featherweight championship live on CBS on June 25th as the co-feature to the Thurman-Porter welterweight title fight. A location for the entire card has yet to be determined.
