Shields is preparing Lara for Martirosyan, then maybe ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

World class trainer Ronnie Shields has his plate full these days, working with a good group of talented young promising fighters. Among those included in the roster are: Edwin Rodriguez, Erislandy Lara, Jermell, and Jermall Charlo.

One of his talented pupils was in action last Saturday night, Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez, and he displayed a near flawless performance in dispatching the inexperienced, but very tough and strong willed Jason Escalera in eight rounds. “I was very pleased with what he did. He followed the game plan. The game plan was this: In the first round, go out there and jump right on top of the kid. You got a young strong kid with a lot of confidence, take the confidence right away from him, right from the beginning and that’s what he did,” Shields explained.

When asked who he’d like to see Rodriguez in there against next Shields responded, “For me as a trainer it doesn’t make a difference. As a trainer, whoever they put in front of him, my job is to break it down and teach him how to beat the guys. That’s my job. Whether it’s Pavlik, whether it’s Pascal, whether it’s Froch or whether it’s Kessler it doesn’t make a difference. At this point in time right now Edwin is one of the best fighters in the world, so he should be able to fight all of those guys now.”

In the not so distant future, another one of Shields’ promising fighters will be in action on November 10. Cuban southpaw, Erislandy Lara will be taking on the highly skilled Vanes Martirosyan at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada in a WBC Super Welterweight final eliminator. “We have a hard fight to think about against Vanes Martirosyan. I trained him before and I know what kind of fighter he is and we have to be at our best,” said Shields.

We all know how these eliminators work out sometimes and that a title shot doesn’t always come right away because of the politics of boxing. Shields doesn’t seem worried about that. “This is supposed to be the final eliminator for Saul Alvarez’ title, so we shouldn’t have to say anything. Jose Sulaiman said the other day that in 2013, “Canelo” Alavarez must face the winner of the November 10th fight.”

Shields has also been busy with the Houston, Texas based twin brothers Jermell and Jermall Charlo. “We are in the process of renegotiating Jermell’s contract with Golden Boy Promotions but Jermall Charlo is fighting on October 26th in Austin Texas, so big ups to those guys they are getting ready.”

It should be interesting to see how this young crop of fighters develops moving forward. They all have a great deal of potential and could possibly be World Champions someday. One thing that we can be certain of is this, they have a very good teacher with 2003 Trainer of The Year, Ronnie Shields in their corner.
