Carter’s career was short lived and only lasted 5 years. He debuted on September 22nd, 1961 with a split decision victory over Pike Reed in Maryland and fought four more times that same year. Carter’s first fight in the following year was also the first loss of his career. In December of 1964 Carter fought for his first and only title shot in his career and lost via unanimous decision. His career continued until August of 1966when he was wrongfully accused of a triple murder that same year, thus ending his career. His record consisted of 27-12-1, 19 KO’s.

The next twenty years of Carter’s life was spent behind bars and he was released in 1985when he was 48 years old. After his release Carter moved to Toronto where he would live for the remainder of his life  and became the executive director of the Association In Defence Of The Wrongly Convicted which is a non-profit organization that helps those wrongfully accused.

In 1999 a movie was released based on Carters incarceration and the fight for his release starring Denzel Washington. The movie featured a song composed by Bob Dylan from 1975 that was inspired by Carter and his case.
