freddie roach ruslan provodnikovWe are just shy of 2 weeks away from one of the boxing’s biggest and most anticipated match-ups this year that doesn’t include the name Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Of course, this is the fight between Ruslan Provodnikov and Lucas Matthysse.

The fight speaks for itself, a notable hard hitting Argentine, who has been steam rolling through opponents with the exception of Danny Garcia and his fight of the year with John Molina Jr who held his ground. Then there’s the fierce Siberian Rocky Ruslan Provodnikov, who is debatably one of the most feared guys at 140 pounds.

This fight, along with Mayweather vs. Pacquiao are precise in a sense that we are not even half way through 2015, and you can’t help but think there are no other match-ups that top these two. What’s intriguing about them though is hall of fame trainer, Freddie Roach, has fighters in both of these fights.

Freddie Roach is well known for guiding Manny Pacquiao to becoming a world phenomenon. When you think of Roach, you automatically think Pacquiao. Having one of the world’s most celebrated fighters sometimes throw his other contenders under the radar, such as Ruslan Provodnikov.

Provodnikov came on the scene when he went to war with Tim Bradley in 2013, proceeded to stop Mike Alvarado in Denver for a world title before taking a loss to 140 contender Chris Algieri. Now Provodnikov is in a fight every boxing fan is dying to see, but he’ll be in it without his world-class trainer.

With Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather finally stepping into the squared circle May 2nd, Freddie Roach is doing anything possibly to make sure training camp goes without a blemish. Anything and everything including not being in Provodnikov’s corner April 18th when he meets Lucas Matthysse in Verona, New York.

This wouldn’t be the first time Roach has left Provodnikov. When he [Provodnikov] took on Mike Alvarado in Denver, CO for Mike’s WBO strap, Provodnikov walked into the bout with assistant trainer Marvin Somodio. The duo, at that time, were impeccable. Winning the fight in dominant fashion and many crediting Somodio for his excellent work. Roach is confident April 18th will be no different,

“He [Provodnikov] and Marvin have a good rapport together. Marvin knows what to do. He’s a very good trainer. Even after a fight when he went to Denver by himself without me and they came through.” Said Roach

“Ruslan will still fight his fight and Marvin will make the adjustments along the way. There will be no problem whatsoever. It’s not the first time or the last time this has happened in my life.”
