Will the mega-fight between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez ever take place? Considering the fact that we are past the mid-way point of September, one could safely say that there is no chance of the fight taking place before the year comes to a close.
Well, what about next year? There are two dates that big boxing fights usually happen around every year and those are Cinco de Mayo which takes place in May and around Mexican Independence Day that would fit well for the two to face off. First, you have Canelo; the redheaded Mexican superstar who really draws a crowd and can fight; then you have GGG, who is a non-Mexican fighter who fights like a Mexican and is adored by Mexicans. The fact that these two were supposed to fight but haven’t yet is a disappointment for boxing fans, but like the whole Mayweather-Pacquiao dilemma, we will never lose hope.
On September 17th, the boxing world will have its eyes on HBO’s pay per view featuring Canelo taking on England’s Liam “Beefy” Smith. It is a fight that many expect Canelo to win handily but given the fact that it seemed too difficult a task to make weight there might be some complications. Despite the questionable punching power of Smith, anything can happen in a fight. If Smith is able to move his hands fast enough, he could catch Canelo with something to put him in trouble. If not, Canelo should be the victor.
While some would love to see Canelo lose, there is one man in particular that wants’ to see Canelo win and then move on to fight Golovkin.
“I’m here at AT&T Stadium to support Canelo,” tweeted Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev. “[I’m] hoping his next fight will be against Gennady Golovkin.”
While Kovalev supports Canelo with high hopes, the boxing world will not believe that it’s a done deal even if contracts are signed. It would have to take the opening bell of round one for us to come to the realization. Should Canelo state (or lead on) during his post-fight interview that he would fight Golovkin, take it with a grain of salt. There are already several opponents in line to face Canelo and he could take those less risky fights and make more money doing so over taking one risky fight for a lucrative payday.
