At The WBC Convention a lot of business was addressed for multiple green belts in 2014.
Stiverne-Wilder Mandatory:
First of the WBC announced that the winner of Bermane Stiverne-Deontay Wilder must face Bryant Jennings. However if Jennings goes the route of fighting Wladimir Klitschko, a second eliminator between Alexander Povetkin and Michael Perez would be ordered if Jennings reaches a deal with Klitschko.
Stevenson Mandatory:
Kathy Duva of Main Events pushed hard and got what she wanted. The winner of the March fight between Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal will be the mandatory to Adonis Stevenson’s 175 lb. WBC Belt. Both guys wanted to fight Stevenson but neither could reach a deal. Stevenson will have to fight the winner but can take an interim fight should he won Friday because the winner of Kovalev-Stevenson will have to fight their IBF Mandatory which is Nadjib Mohammedi.
Mayweather’s Mandatory:
Mayweather holds both the 147 and 154 lb. version of the titles. So the WBC has approved a tournament style knockout stage with the top 8 fighters ranked in each division for Mayweather’s mandatories. Not only does that give Mayweather time to defend both belts but also gives Mayweather and Pacquiao time to negotiate a fight should it happen.
Cotto Mandatory:
Gennady Golovkin was named Miguel Cotto’s mandatory but has allowed Cotto to take a voluntary defense in between.
Garcia Mandatory:
Mandatory contender Viktor Postol has agreed to take step aside money and allow Garcia a voluntary defense of his tile . The winner of that fight must fight Postol next.
135 lb. Mandatory:
Kevin Mitchell vs. Daniel Estrada was approved as the next mandatory after Hank Lundy fights Dejan Zlaticanin for the number 1 spot. Figueroa is the champion in recess while Linares and Preto have a fight lined up next month for the vacant belt.
130 lb. Belt:
Stephen Smith to fight Javier Fortune to be the number 1 contender for Miura’s 130 pound belt.
Leo Santa Cruz Mandatory:
Andres Gutierrez vs. Hugo Ruiz has been ordered by the WBC for Leo Santa Cruz’ mandatory defence.
Roman Gonzalez Mandatory:
Nawaphon Sor Rungvisai to fight Edgar Sosa for mandatory position to face WBC Flyweight Champion Roman Gonzalez.
