It’s been nearly 4 months since we’ve seen Sergio Martinez in the ring. In his last bout, he sold out a stadium in Argentina in his bout with Martin Murray. Rumors were circulating that maybe Martinez wasn’t 100% in that fight and whether that was true or not, Martinez looked like a fighter who may be on the decline. Martinez wasn’t quite as mobile and eat big shots from the traveling Brit in a bout where so feel Murray won.

After the fight, Martinez needed to have another knee operation and was shelved for the rest of 2013. As for how, the middleweight champion is recuperating; ThaBoxingvoice.com caught up with Sergio’s trainer at the Geale-Barker fight this past weeks, Pablo Sarmiento, and the coach said Martinez is doing fine.

Sergio’s recuperating from the knee injury doing good, training lightly without pain, still things are under negotiations. But we hope for him to return in March or April of next year, but the opponent is still yet to be determined.

Since Sergio Martinez has defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last September, the middleweight division has become one of the more loaded divisions in the sport, so Martinez’ options to fight someone in his return next year are vast. One option that could be foreseen would have be the winner and the loser of last Saturday’s title bout between Darren Barker and Daniel Geale which Barker won a narrow split decision in a very entertaining bout. When asked if he had an eye on that very fight in regards to a possible opponent, Sarmiento stated, “We still don’t know but everyone wants to fight for Sergio, we have to wait till the dust settled and see who we can fight.”

Sure, there are plenty of options on who Martinez can fight, but if you let the fans decide, majority of them would like to see Martinez in the ring with the fast rising middleweight knockout star Gennady Golovkin, who dispatched of Matthew Macklin in June of this year in 3 rounds. Macklin was a former Martinez opponent, who some would say gave Martinez a very tough fight. Many promoters like Sergio’s promoter, Lou Dibella have stated that a fight with Golovkin needs to be thought long and hard for any of their fighters, but Sarmiento wanted to make it clear, they do want a piece of “The Good Boy”, as many have come to call him.

“We want that fight, the Middleweight champion is Sergio, the best pound for pound is Sergio, he wants to fight us and we want to fight him next year. But we have to wait and see what the negotiations bring but make no mistake, we want that fight.”

Writer’s note: When speaking to a member of Team Martinez on Saturday night on what would be a possible fight in Sergio’s return, he stated that a fight with Miguel Cotto is really being discussed for next year at Madison Square Garden in a possible pay-per-view event. He also stated that both sides are definitely interested should Cotto beat Delvin Rodriguez.
