Shannon-briggs-interview#6 WBA heavyweight contender Shannon Briggs (58-6-1, 51 knockouts) snagged his seventh consecutive fight on Friday evening. Briggs knocked down 48-year old Hungarian fighter Zoltan Petranyi , (51-22-1, 16 knockouts) twice in the 1st round to close the show at Hotel Sortis in Panama City, Panama.

Things got heated between Shannon Briggs and Petrayni at the weigh-in. At one point, the former WBO heavyweight champion, grabbed the Hungarian’s throat, and both had to be separated.

Perhaps the blood hadn’t settled when the first round got underway.
Briggs was deducted for throwing his opponent down to the canvas mere seconds into the fight. When Petranyi got back up, he was dropped by a paralyzing body shot, but found the courage to get back up.
The second shot to Petranyi’s flabby body, however, kept him on the bottom of the elevator shaft.

Shockingly, Petranyi had won 15 consecutive bouts before his bout with Shannon Briggs, which really makes you question the caliber of the opponents he has been facing since June 2007. Considering he hasn’t had any form of a title shot in over a decade, it sounds like the opposition has been cruddy.
For Briggs, he earned his sixth knockout in his last seven fights in a comeback that began in April 2014. All of his knockouts during this time span have come in the first round.

Despite facing decrepit opposition throughout his comeback, the World Boxing Association, continues to bump him up the rankings. If this continues after this performance, he could get a title shot at IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko before WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

It appears more likely that if Shannon Briggs is going to get a title shot, he will be able to fight Wladimir without having to face a serious contender first. Which is Shannon Briggs’s only hope If the fight does take place, we can expect another horrible beatdown, reminiscent to Vitali Klitschko’s dismantlement of Briggs in 2010. Let’s hope someone in the boxing world has a heart and makes sure this fight never happens.
