Shawn “Showtime” Porter will square off against “The Contender” alumni Alfonso Gomez. The fight will be the co-feature of Showtime Championship Boxing’s main-event between Robert Guerrero and Selcuk Aydin which takes place next weekend in San Jose, California. The Porter-Gomez fight will open up the telecast.

Porter is a welterweight and an undefeated prospect with 14 KO’s in 19 professional fights. He’s been moving pretty slow as of late with only one fight in all of 2011 and just one fight thus far in 2012. That will change, however, with Porter taking on his toughest opponent to date in Gomez.

Gomez has become a real important test for fighters looking to move along in their career. I wouldn’t quite label him a “stepping stone” fighter due to the fact he always makes tough fights. In Gomez’s last fight, he took it to rising Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The Canelo-Gomez fight took place on last year’s Mayweather-Ortiz undercard, as the co-feature of the night. Gomez was handling his own until the controversial stoppage took place in the 6th round, giving Canelo the TKO victory. Many believe the stoppage was premature, though Gomez was down in the 1st round of the contest.

Porter’s lack of fights hasn’t been due to the lack of offers. In fact, it has been reported that Porter turned down significant step up fights from the Maidana Camp, amongst others. This is speculation, but the time for padding the record is behind Porter and if he can defeat Gomez next weekend it could set up an even bigger fight for him come fall/winter.

Gomez is 5-1 in his last 6 fights and he has notable wins against the likes of Arturo Gatti, Jesus Soto Karass, and Jose Luis Castillo with notable losses against Peter Manfredo Jr and Miguel Cotto. Gomez puts up fan favorite performances and this fight adds to the quality of next weekend’s card.
