Angel Garcia - Danny GarciaFormer junior welterweight titlist and now welterweight contender Danny Garcia is scheduled to face Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on January 23rd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California as part of a televised PBC card on FOX. Garcia-Guerrero headlines the debut of PBC on FOX and is scheduled for 12 rounds in the welterweight division.

This will only be Garcia’s second official fight at the welterweight limit (147lbs). It may seem as though Garcia has been campaigning at 147lbs for quite some time, but in actuality, he made his debut earlier this year against Paulie Malignaggi which headlined a card televised on ESPN.

Guerrero is coming off a very shaky performance against Aaron Martinez in a bout that saw Guerrero hit the canvas in the 4th. Guerrero won a 10 round split decision victory, but he was in trouble in the fight and many believe he got the benefit of the doubt as the notable A-side in his backyard of Carson, California at the StubHub Center.

This is a significant fight for both men as they desperately need wins moving forward. They have both seemed vulnerable in past outings, but a solid performance could erase the memory of fans and give them enough momentum for a meaningful money fight in the division.

Danny and his father/trainer Angel Garcia are hoping that Christmas lasts longer than its December 25th date and will instead be extended to fit their agendas beyond the 23rd of January in 2016. The hope is that a win against Guerrero, a common opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr., will spark the interests of the recently retired pound for pound king and former cash cow of the sport, a title he relinquished only through the announcement of his retirement.

In a recent interview with Thaboxingvoice’s Fernando Pimentel, Angel Garcia admitted that a win for his son Danny against Guerrero could at the very least gain the attention of Mayweather should he decide to go after his 50th win – Floyd’s record currently sits at 49-0. It would appear as though Angel is part of the many doubters predicting Mayweather won’t stay retired.

When asked about a Guerrero win enticing Mayweather to make a showdown with Danny in a video posted on Thaboxingvoice’s YouTube channel, Angel responded by saying, ”it might, I don’t know how true [it is] Floyd saying he retired because a lot of fighters say they retire and they come back. How many times Manny haven’t retired, and he’s gonna fight again – a third time with Bradley. But the thing is, I can’t see Floyd retiring. I can see him 50-0 and then, whatever, 49-1.”

The problem is that Danny may have waited too long to start calling out Floyd at this point. Whether Mayweather stays retired or not, there was a time when Danny’s status was at an all-time high and mentions and suggestions of a Mayweather-Garcia fight were being offered up by fans, media and those with no known affiliations to either camp.

Instead of trying to lure Mayweather into a fight or capitalizing off of his standing, in general, Garcia chose a path that weakened his overall commercial status. Now, with the hope of securing a big money fight, Team Garcia is up for a meeting with the leader of the Money team and will attempt to produce the kind of lasting impression over Guerrero that has the misguided masses saying, ‘well, Floyd couldn’t even stop him and look what Danny did to him.’

“I can’t really say what he’s thinking right now he’s enjoying life. That’s a good thing. He’s fought enough, he fought hard. I can’t see him retiring. I can see one more fight in him.”
