1401827159AS1Accompanied by promoter Tom Loeffler and trainer Abel Sanchez, middleweight star Gennady “GGG” Golovkin met with the media to discuss his dominant victory over Mexican, Marco Antonio Rubio and what the future might hold.

“Triple G” made quick work of Rubio, stopping him in the second-round with a vicious combination. The power the Kazakh possesses seemed to take the fight entirely out of his opponent who only half-heartedly tried to beat the count. Golovkin added the WBC interim title to his WBA and IBO middleweight championship belts.

After Golovkin’s third fight of the year and eighteenth stoppage victory in a row, the fan-friendly fighter has barely been in a competitive fight. He is lacking a household name on his record to push him to the status of an elite fighter. After already calling out WBC Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto and Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Golovkin’s team made it clear they would also be interested in fighting IBF/WBA Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch.

On the possibility of fighting UK super-middleweight star Carl Froch, Loeffler said at the post-fight press conference “Carl Froch, is a guy who is a huge attraction over in England, he fights in soccer stadiums and that would be a tremendous fight over in the UK. I will reach out to Eddie Hearn.”

On the difficulty of getting a big PPV fighter to face Golovkin, promoter Tom Loeffler added “You can’t force these guys to get in the ring with him. That’s why I give so much credit to Rubio because he agreed to fight.”

Golovkin and his team are obviously frustrated that so far they have been unable to get a PPV fight. Big name fighters have been very reluctant when discussing a potential fight with Golovkin. It will be interesting to see how Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn responds to Loeffler’s openness for a UK showdown.

It would be a big fight for Froch who is nearing the end of his career. Hearn has already admitted they are also perusing a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in what could be Froch’s last before retiring. Like many others however, I feel Hearn will be very cautious about giving Golovkin a fight with Froch. A huge offer would need to be on the table before a high-risk fight with Golovkin would be considered. It will be interesting to see what 2015 holds for Golovkin. Fans want to see how he will fair against elite opposition but they may need to be patience for a little while longer yet.
